December 2011… Feat: Tyketto/Wrathchild/Def Leppard/Motley Crue/Steel Panther/ Dr. & The Medics/Dawn Trader/Thunder/HELL…

December 31st… HELL (MFN Shipley Gate)…
And now the end is near etc… yes folks it’s New Years Eve and as we say goodbye to 2011 and a big HELLo to 2012 there’s time for just one more gig and boy what a show it was. HELL round off their renascence with a New Years Eve show to remember and by doing so lay down their intensions for next year. The setting is MFN in Thunder Valley and the atmosphere is building to a crescendo, earlier in the year the reformed NWOBHM band made their comeback at MFN after a quarter of a century away from the scene and sold the place out. Tonight they play a phenomenal set of old songs from their debut album ‘Human Remains’ and some new songs from their forthcoming much anticipated second album. Although tonight is not sold out it is still packed with not only local people but many who have travelled long distances to be here. HELL have built up a fanatical following over the past year or so, way back in the early 1980’s this was not always the case, I was at their first show in 83’ I think it was and their was a fraction of the people at that one than is here tonight. The reason for this in my view is that HELL were way ahead of the time but now the world is ready for them it looks likely that a major tour is imminent so it’s time to ‘deliver us from evil’ as the dawn of a new year begins ‘let battle commence’… GD.

December 18th… Dawn Trader… (The Rescue Rooms Nottingham)…
It’s Christmas party season and not to be done out of hosting one Dawn Trader have booked into the re-vamped Rescue Rooms in Nottingham. Trader have had an astronomical year having launched their debut album ‘Castle’ back in May (25 years late) as well as supporting great bands like Y&T and the mighty Status Quo to cement their return. The master of ceremonies tonight is none other than rock leg end Mr. Badaxe who insists on playing an acoustic set of Badaxe songs, altogether now… ‘Who’s that hiding in the garden? It’s Bin Laden it’s Bin Laden’. After these debased shenanigans it’s time for a bit of sanity and a bunch of young lads called Sucker Punch play a support set which appeals to the younger members of the crowd. When Dawn Trader do hit the stage they seem determined to make tonight a memorable one with several former band members taking to the stage to perform with them. However the best kept secret of the evening (not) was to be a guest appearance by none other than Graham Oliver (Saxon/OD Saxon) pictured with GD, Graham once jammed with the Trader boys in the early 80’s and has waited till tonight to repeat the feat. Saxon’s ‘Wheels of steel’, Cream’s ‘white room’ and a rock n’ roll medley are played to a warm reception from the audience. This show was all about having fun and fun is what we had, despite Mr. Badaxe playing for us twice. I met up with Graham Oliver after the show and was reliably informed that Oliver Dawson Saxon will be releasing a new album in the New Year and playing this very venue in March with Dawn Trader, a show well worth waiting for GD.

December 16th… Dr. & The Medics… (The Sitwell Tavern Derby)…
It’s been a while since I last paid a visit to the Sitwell tavern in Derby, the biker friendly pub have live bands on once or twice a week and it’s free, tonight its Christmas party time as 80’s chart toppers Dr. & The Medics are here to do a turn. Front man and founding member of Dr. & The Medics Clive Jackson, who regularly MC’d the Rock & Blues festival here in Derbyshire leads a group of young talented musicians playing a range of cover songs designed to be fun and entertaining. Co singer Melissa Weekes steals the show with her vocal talents while the rest of the bands personnel ably accompany the Dr. The chart topping ‘spirit in the sky’ is the highlight of the set witch includes sing along songs such as ‘the time warp’ a festive fun night was had by one and all, up coming gigs at the Sitwell tavern include some great bands such as New Generation Superstars, JD & The FDCs, A Thousand Enemies, Wyldchild, Ozzbest and Verbal Warning … GD.

December 8th… Def Leppard + Motley Crue + Steel Panther (Nottingham Arena)…
First off let’s get one thing clear, arena gigs are not my cup of tea however on this occasion I’ve made an exception and upon arrival at the venue proceed to bump into pretty much everyone I know which is loads of fun... Crue and Leppard, not an obvious alliance (in the words of Vince Neil… ‘ Crazy shit man’) but these days I recon neither band can sell out an arena tour on their own so by attracting two sets of fans and like yours truly, fans of both bands a sell out is guaranteed.

First up is Steel Panther, what can I say about this lot? A cabaret act? A parody band? A tongue in cheek outfit? Well, having laughed at their one joke (a bad one at that) the rest of their act was a travesty, thing is it’s all been done before (Spinal Tap, Bad News, Badaxe, The Macc Lads) one album, one tour, take the money and run, fine but I’ve heard Panther have released a second album, incredulous! Like the drummers Nome de plume, Styx Zardinia Steel Panther are definitely shafting the punters and seemingly getting away with it, hay ho.

On with the show and Motley Cure take to the stage, I’m almost deafened by the noise and that’s just the ladies in the crowd screaming at Nikki Sixx. Crue play a predictable but enjoyable set of old favourites with star of the show Tommy Lee playing piano and riding his drum kit around a roller coaster loop and at one point when left on his own on stage and running out of things to say he offered to take his clothes off… ‘You’ve all seen it before’ he quips. His fellow Crue are sadly not as entertaining and seem to be playing it all by numbers.

Although tonight is a double headlining show some one has to go on last. Def Leppard sadly fail to pull this off, they have a vast back catalogue of songs and thirty plus years of experience which somehow has deserted them in their hour of need. Playing a lack lustre set of boring songs Leppard fall short of their predecessors on the stage, Sweet’s ‘Action’ being covered badly is just one low point, with a hand full of good songs ‘let it go’, ‘Armageddon it’, ‘animal’ and ‘photograph’ being surrounded by a bucket load of tedious numbers the entire evening ended in anticlimax, Motely Crue should have gone on last but over all I had a whale of a time at this social event of the year… GD

December 3rd… Wrathchild @ Wildside (The Salutation Nottingham)…
It’s the first Saturday of the month so that must mean it’s time for Wildside, the rock club night which features live music prior to the DJ’s sets. This month it’s British glam legends Wrathchild, I personally class them as a NWOBHM band with big hair and make-up. I first saw them way back in the early 80’s and tonight’s set includes vintage songs such as ‘trash queen’, ‘nukklear rokket’ and ‘kick down the walls’ as well as some great new material form their latest CD ‘Hollywood or bust’ and ‘trick or treat’ being the pick of the crop from ‘Stakkatakktwo’. the show is going well with the tattoo festooned front man Gaz Harris (a relative new comer to the band) ably backed up by original Wrathchild band members Marc Angel (bass) Eddie Starr (drums) and the awesome Phil Wrathchild (lead guitar). After the show the guys from Wrathchild hung around most of the night enjoying the Widside club night a thoroughly cool bunch of chaps well worth checking out… GD.

Blackfoot Live @ The Flowerpot Derby (11/11/11)

Blackfoot… The Flowerpot… Derby… 11:11:11…

It’s fair to say that I had ‘no reservations’ about buying a ticket for tonight’s show at the ever reliable Flowerpot… The ‘Pot’ not only supplies excellent traditional ales but is unrelenting in its drive to bring live music to the city of Derby. Tonight’s band hail from across the pond originally from Jacksonville Florida, Blackfoot have been playing their brand of southern rock for over four decades now. I first saw them way back in 1981 at the second Monsters of Rock festival at Castle Donnington, the following year 1982 Blackfoot toured the UK and I saw them in Derby at the assembly rooms, a stones throw away from tonight’s venue.

Blackfoot these days has a very different line-up from then, with only bassist and backing singer Greg T. Walker (pictured with GD) left from the original personnel, the band have moved forward with new lead singer/guitarist Mike Estes and drummer Kurt Pietro both from the band Skinny Molly and the even newer member of Blackfoot Randy Peak on lead guitar/Harmonica. Opening the show with the classic song ‘good morning’ from their 1981 album ‘Marauder’ Blackfoot seem like they’re enjoying themselves, even though they were a little tight on time when they arrived in Derby. After the show Greg T. told me that they played a gig up north the night before and due to their bus breaking down they took a slight detour to Crew and only got to the flowerpot about an hour and a half before the show. Anyway back to the set and with more great songs such as ‘Fly Away’ and ‘Dry County’ also from ‘Marauder’ along with ‘I Got a Line on You’, ‘Baby Blue’, ‘Highway Song’, ‘Train Train’ and ‘Left Turn on a Red Light’ all coming from their brilliant 1979 album ‘Strikes’ The packed crowd are having a great time. New man Randy Peak plays a mean mouth organ or ‘harp’ as it’s referred to by Mike Estes on both ‘Train Train’ and ‘Fox Chase’ the latter from the 1980 album ‘Tomcattin’ while both Randy and Mike play some mean slide guitar throughout the show. They include a couple of covers, ‘Wishing Well’ which they recorded for their ‘Strikes’ album and with a shaggy dog story attached to it ‘Crossroads’…
A few years ago 2005 I think it was Skinny Molly opened for Blackfoot at the Rock & Blues festival at Pentrich (I was There) apparently Kurt the drummer got locked up in jail so Greg T invited the rest of Skinny Molly to play ‘Crossroads’ with them… Well something along those lines. Front man Mike Estes is somewhat of a whit and raconteur between songs and he trots out several of these stories throughout the night along with his favourite word ‘Awesome’ which he pronounces differently than I’ve ever heard before and if you don’t believe me check out the footage I shot for YouTube… http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?sq=blackfoot
After the show the members of Blackfoot all took the time to hang out and sign stuff for the well satisfied crowd I for one was flying high after watching such an Awesome show… GD.

Dawn Trader Album Launch Review

Dawn Trader (Album Launch)… Stealth… Nottingham… 13:05:11…

A long time ago in a Universe far away… Well maybe I’ve used that opening line before but in this case it really seems appropriate. Back in ancient times at the very beginning of the nineteen eighties NWOBHM was king, now I know I bang on about the new wave of British heavy metal ad nauseam but it did open the door for a plethora of hard rock bands up and down the country. Nottingham’s Dawn Trader was one such band, during their six or seven year tenure they manage to rack up around sixty songs but failed to commercially release anything substantial, so when in the mid eighties their star faded into the west never more to shine they seemed destined to be remembered for their live shows only. But wait a minute! Over a quarter of a century later not only have Dawn Trader reformed they’ve recorded (at last) their debut album and are launching this magnum opus on Friday the 13th at Stealth (part of the rock city complex) in their home city of Nottingham.
Yours truly rocks up to the gig at the appointed hour only to find band manager Ashley Mortimer fretting about the gust list, apparently if everyone who said they were attending turned up the venue capacity would be exceeded. Before Dawn Trader take to the stage there’s time to catch up with old and new friends alike as the buzz of excitement grows. There’s also time to purchase the new twelve track album, entitled Castle which is being sold tonight along with two t-shirts for the measly sum if twenty English pounds.
Dawn Trader in true rock star style, take to the stage about half an hour late and after their interminably long intro tape burst into the opening track of the album, turn down quickly following this with track two, homebreaker both of which wow the packed venue. The guys on the PA are giving the band an awesome sound as Trader real off one great song after another, roller, bad loser, flash in the sky, take it, no reason, whiskey and coke, angel and lights out nights out all coming from their ‘new album’, whole lotta trouble and lonely nights being the only two songs in the set not to appear on Castle. The current line-up of Dawn Trader consists of Mick Preston (lead vocals) Wayne Vizard (lead guitar) Pete Limb (drums) Ric Evans (bass) and Steve Humphries (lead guitar and confectionary) on stage they all seem to be having an immense amount of fun as does the hot and perspiring audience, it’s Steve’s birthday and having been presented with a chocolate cake proceeds to smear it all over front man Mick Preston who until now looked resplendent in his trademark red strides. All good things etc and with old and new fans all having a ball with plenty of dancing at the front it’s time for the last song of the evening, the titular castle a song of around ten minutes long and a fine send off to what as been a great album launch night. Next stop for Dawn Trader is the Lincoln show ground and a support slot with the mighty Status Quo, Steve assures us that he and Rossi will sort out the birthday cake… A euphemism perhaps?
Let’s hope that Dawn Trader don’t take as long to bring out their next album… GD.

Castle (CD Review)…

When you get as long in the tooth as me and you’ve listened to pretty much every album worth listening to you tend to envy the young who have yet to discover classic albums such as Rainbow Rising, Wheels of Steel, Disraeli Gears or Sgt. Pepper for example. Oh how I would love to be able to erase my memory of Holy Diver so I could listen to it for the first time all over again. Well Dawn Trader’s album Castle gives you a bit of that, like discovering Rainbow wrote Long Live rock n’ Roll part II and hid it away for three decades, Castle could easily have been unearthed by the time team. Track one is Turn Down, a bouncy fun song indicative of the hard rock genre of the early eighties, it’s only message is to tell us what we already know, play it loud mother f@kers! Track two is Homebreaker not only all one word but a rip roaring track with catchy riffs shifting around all over the place, I would have made this song track one as it’s a much better than Turn Down. Take it is track three full of nifty lead breaks and it possesses one of the best riffs on the album. No Reason is up next a solid number if a little plodding. Track five is the ‘classic’ Roller a crowd pleaser when played live, Roller ticks all the boxes of what a rock song should be like. The whole of Castle it has to be said is very well produced and is quite unique in that all the songs are twenty five years old or more but are coming to us in the twenty first century as fresh as the Colgate ring of confidence. Running for your Life opens up with what sound remarkably like an early Iron Maiden riff, the song is ‘heavier’ than most of the album and is typically 1980’s NWOBHM. Track seven is Bad Loser a sing along number which begs for crowd participation when played live. Angel another favourite of the live shows is next, a galloping drum beat accompanies this heavier song. Whiskey and Coke is track nine, a rock n’ roll romp one for all the drinkers to chant along to. The tenth song of the album is Lights out Nights out another gem with some cool harmonies in the middle. Flash in the Sky is the penultimate track of the CD and of all the songs on the album this is probably the best one to practice your air guitar to. And so to the finale’ and the title track, Castle is a song of epic proportions weighing in at around ten minutes Castle stops and starts a bit before building up to a crescendo which nicely cues in the final explosion! A fitting end to what is a classic album from Dawn Trader and I highly recommend you go and buy it or down load it or what ever else you do these days… Visit Dawn Trader’s web site http://www.dawntrader.net/ for further information… GD

Terrorvision - Rock City Nottingham

Terrorvision… Rock City… Nottingham… 27:02:11…

Tequila it makes me happy… Not really, the stuff makes me wanna puke but it’s great to sing along to the Terrorvision song Tequila, their biggest hit single having reached the dizzying heights of number 2 in the UK charts at the end of the nineties. I first saw Terrorvision at this very venue right at the beginning of the nineties way before their chart topping TOTP TV appearance, I went on to see them several times more during that decade including their Castle Donnington Monsters of Rock appearance in 1994, observing them grow from playing in ‘disco2’ (the basement) in front of a handful of people to selling out rock city’s main stage the scene of tonight’s show. This evening isn’t a sell out but to say Terrorvision have been ‘away’ on and off for about ten years this comeback tour along with a brand new album super deluxe it’s very well supported by the boys from Bradford’s loyal fans.
First up tonight is the support band Gentlemans Pistols who also hail from Yorkshire, this Leeds based band are a throwback to the sixties with their hair, clothes and sound. The songs The Lady, Widow Maker and Parking Banshee have a distinctive Cream/Hendrix sound to them whereas Living in Sin Again and Heavy Petting have a Sabbath/Purple thing going on. I would definitely go and check out this four piece rock band again, they are worthy openers for tonight’s show.
It’s a Sunday night so I’m taking it steady on the old sauce and cramming myself at the front of the stage in anticipation of seeing Terrorvision again after such a long time. Last year they were on the bill of Sonisphere festival at Knebworth, I caught a glimpse of them as I failed miserably to squash into the packed out marquee in which they were playing right at the end of a very long day. I did hear them however as I skulked off back to my tent in exhausted disappointment. Tonight it’s about nine o’clock when they hit the stage and open up their set with D’ya Wanna go Faster a song from their 2001 album Good to Go which is received enthusiastically from the large crowd but not as enthusiastically as the next song, Formaldehyde’s, My House. The third song, Discothèque Wreck from their seminal album How to Make Friends and Influence People (1994) gives front man Tony Wright some tongue twisting moments before he launches into the first of no less than eight songs from their new album. All the Girls Wanna Dance followed by Neighbourhood, dedicated to us Nottingham folk (hood! Get it?) are both good songs, I confess to not having heard Super Delux yet but on the strength of hearing the songs live I’ll be rushing out to buy it sometime soon. Terrorvision have constructed a well paced set interspersing the new material with old classics such as Some People Say, Celebrity Hit List, Josephine, Dog Chewed the Handle, Middleman and Oblivion.
Terrorvision these days are made up of original band members, Mark Yates (lead guitar) Leigh Marklew (bass) Tony Wright (lead vocals) and two ‘new’ boys Milton Evans (keys) who’s been in the band a few years now along with Cameron Greenwood (drums) who is replacing drum legend Shutty. Front man Tony Wright, who’s only a few years younger than me must have been on the monkey glands or something because for an hour and a half he never stops running and jumping around the stage as he sings the at times complex lyrics of Terrovision’s sings. Just about everything tonight is ‘shit hot’ according to the bluff Yorkshire man, he and his band seem pleased by the reception they receive. With Tequila having been played early on it’s down to Terrorvision’s only other top five hit single Perseverance along with Babylon (Super Delux) and the classic Alice What’s the Matter to make up the three song encore, making a mammoth twenty four song set, now that’s what I call a show! With some new fans in the audience tonight seeing Terrorvision for the first time the regular urban survivors from Bradford definitely know how to make friends and influence people… GD.
